The mission of the Kinetic Gallery is to provide a space where both student artists and student curators can gain professional exhibit experience, specifically through displays organized by Activities Commission Arts & Exhibits. The gallery features works from both student and outside artists and, through its exhibits, the Kinetic Gallery facilitates the development of an appreciation of and interest in the fine arts among all students.
Botanical Art by Hillary Fayle
October 8 - November 8
Artist Statement: Ornantur Foliss is a Latin translation of "Ornamented Leaf'. In this body of work, flora is transformed into art through intricate cutting and embroidery as a means of exploring my relationship with nature and the possibility for interaction without exploitation.
I belive it is important to study balance in nature and the positive and negative ways in which we interact and impact the environment in our daily lives. Much of this work investigates the action of stitching which simultaneously mends and maims. Th need for subtlety and delicacy in creating and considering this art could be taken as a metaphorical suggestion about our greater relationship with the environment.
Furthermore, the use of Latin, an extinct language, references the classification system of the natural world but also draws a connection to the issue of exploitation and the mass extinction faced by thousands of species worldwide. This work touches on the gravity of this situation, but my focus is on positive interactions; to inspire stewardship and responsibility. In a sense, I want to plant a seed for the future.
