Distinguishing Features:
This is an experienced support position directly assisting a research project or program, either in the laboratory or in the field, under the direction of a scientist or other professional.

Level of Complexity:
Incumbents perform a variety of routine and/or semi-skilled tasks in assisting scientists or other professionals. Activities may include care and maintenance of apparatus and equipment; care of animals used in tests; observing and recording using gauges, graphs or other measurement techniques and devices; assembling, preparing, labelling and dispensing products or materials, taking inventories and similar tasks

Knowledge/Formal Training:
Incumbents should have education in a specific field directly related to the research or the program. For positions involving animal subjects, basic knowledge of the general physical characteristics and behaviors of animals used in an assignment and an ability to observe changes in animal behavior and maintain records of an animal's condition is required. Incumbents must have working knowledge of typical tests or procedures relative to the field and must have familiarity with the operation of specialized apparatus or equipments.

Job Related Experience/Special Skills:
Incumbents should have at least one year of experience directly related to the project or program. Laboratory positions require experience in a laboratory environment and/or with laboratory animals.

Guidance Received:
Incumbents work within a standard detailed procedure as directed by supervising scientist or other professional and must be able to follow written or oral instructions to carry out multiple tasks involving a series of related steps or actions in complicated processes.
