Society's national office is located in Alexandria, Virginia. Over
160 paid staff members administer the day-to-day business of the Society.
SHRM supports an executive network of local student and professional chapters
throughout the United States and in Puerto Rico, Guam, and Bermuda.
These groups are managed by local volunteer leaders and, in some of the
larger chapters, a paid administrator.
For administrative purposes, SHRM divides the country into six geographical area. To find out what area your chapter is located in check the directory of SHRM chapters. An area vice president (AVP) coordinates the activities of all the professional chapters, student chapters, and members-at-large (members not affiliated with a chapter) in the area. The AVP, also a member of the Board of Directors, serves as the primary organizational link between the national headquarters and the local professional chapters and membership. Many areas appoint state and area college relations directors. These individuals serve as a link between the professional chapters and the local colleges, universities, and student chapters. Local professional chapters often elect a student chapter liaison to interact with the local chapter(s). Each of these volunteer leaders wants to see your chapter succeed, so do hot hesitate to call on them for advice and assistance. The student chapter liaison should be your direct contact with the professional SHRM chapter in your community. If you do not know who your chapter liaison is, contact your sponsoring chapter or the National SHRM office. On a national level, the student program manager, on staff at SHRM, works
closely with the national College Relations Committee to manage and direct
the student membership program.
