The Anchor Spring 2004

Hello AKPhi Alumnae!

It’s your Alumni Secretary Sue DeMetropolis. This year has been an exciting one for Alpha Kappa Phi and it’s time for all you to catch up on everything that has been going on! It’s never too late to catch up on the latest AKPhi news, and here’s your chance!

Rush, Final Bids and Pledging

Our Formal Rush was held at the Historic Avon Inn on February the 10th. Dirty Rush was then held on February 12th with the fraternity Phi Kappa Chi. Final Bids was held on Valentine’s Day, February 14th with our “sweathearts” the Sig Taus. It was an unforgettable night. With the help of alumni from Spring ’00, we had a great night with our new Spring 2004 pledge class. Now into their fifth week of pledging, we have an incredible pledge class of nine little sailors. Our marvelous pledge mistress Stephanie Brown is doing a great job with her side kick Emily Roemmelt as Assistant.

Spring Weekend

Get your drinking shoes on for Spring Weekend. April will be approaching soon, and we would love to have as many alumni back as possible. There will be wine and cheese at the Ago house on Saturday April 24th from 12 pm till 2 pm for all Ago alumni to reconnect and have a fabulous ole’ time. This will then be followed by our annual Four-Way with the fraternities Phigs, Sig Taus, and our next-door neighbors, the Phi Lambs. We will be selling Alumni Weekend t-shirts and more to help raise money for the Ago Fund. The house will be rocking with a live band and tons of food, so come hang out, it will be a blast! We also will be compiling a collage of alumni’s favorite Ago Memory, so if you can e-mail ago@geneseo.edu with your Ago memory.

House Updates

Twenty-Six Wadsworth Street is still one of the most gorgeous houses on campus to this day. Thanks to the generous donations from our first annual Ago House Fund drive, we were able to do many renovations and improvements this past summer. Among the changes were new bunk beds in the Blue Room and Nursery, new carpeting in the upstairs hallway and back staircase, wallpapering the dining room, painting the living room, downstairs bathroom and foyer, and redoing the entire circular staircase and landing at the top of the stairs to restore it to its original hardwood state.

Ago House Fund

The Agos have resided at 26 Wadsworth since 1969. As the house gets older, more improvements and maintenance are needed. It is our hope that we can count on our alumni’s generosity to continue to improve the Ago house the way that it should be. As alumni, you can still help make a difference, so please consider the Ago House Fund so we can beautify this Victorian house we call “home” and that we can continue to have the best sorority house in Geneseo.

Homecoming 2003

Homecoming was a wonderful and fun filled weekend. With a tremendous turnout from Spring 1993 alumni, the Ago House was bumping. Despite the dreary, rainy day, AKPhi kept up the tradition of the float with the help of our DK friend Duke driving the float to the theme of “Saved by the Bell”. Thanks to all who came to hang out and reunite. We look forward to another great Homecoming this coming Fall 2004.

Alpha Kappa Phi’s New Advisors

We would like to introduce our brand new six advisors of sorority. Due to the birth of Mary’s new little girl, these six ladies have stepped it up to assist in filling Mary’s shoes. We are forever grateful for all of their help and support. It is very much appreciated.

Alex Bull (’94), Elaine Bull (’95), Tayla Branca (’97), Erica Thomas (’97), Kelly Sivers (’99), and Laura Luley (’99)

Treasurer Jennifer Kluge Sparcino (’87) is still taking care of the books for Alpha Kappa Phi Inc., thanks for your continued hard work!

We would also like to give a huge thank you to our Alumna Representative Alison Van Houten Knauf (’91) for all of her help this past summer with the Ago House improvements and for taking her time and dedication to keep this house the best on campus. We truly appreciate all she has done.

Philanthropies

AKPhi takes pride in the numerous charity events done in the Fall 2003 semester and now in Spring 2004. Together as a sorority, we were able to help a less fortunate family through “Adopt A Family”. Each sister helped brighten this family’s Christmas day by generously donating gifts to the children, including clothing, toys, and books. We also adopted a family for Thanksgiving. The sisters also volunteered their time for Habitat for Humanity, where girls went and assisted in building houses for the needy. We also visited a horse farm in the area that adopts sick horses and nurses them back to health!

Fundraising

Last fall, we organized the “Ago Lottery” Fundraiser, where we raised approximately $1,000 for sorority. The pledges are doing their annual Candy Drive and selling hotdogs outside the Inn Between.

We would like to congratulate and wish the best of luck to our lovely seniors graduating this upcoming May! Good Luck in all your future endeavors!
