Dear Parents/ Guardians,

My Name is Alison Cardoso and I am so pleased to welcome both you and your child to High School Social Studies.I am a recent graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo, which is located just south of Rochester, NY. I graduated with my Bachelors in History and Adolescent Education.I am currently working towards obtaining my Masters in Education. I am originally from Carmel, NY which is just north of New York City. I am looking forward to getting to know both you and your child this year. High School Social Studies students will achieve a great deal this year in terms of academic growth and self-confidence, both in and out of the classroom. Good parent - teacher communication is integral to the academic success of your child.

I would like to briefly outline my expectations of your child for this year. I assign homework on a regular basis and will attempt to avoid assigning homework on Fridays, as the weekends are a time to spend with family and friends. However, I expect homework to be done prior to the start of class, and I will either collect it or check it at the start of each day. Homework serves two purposes: to reinforce what we have learned in the classroom that day, and to teach responsibility. A child that comes to class without completed homework loses twice - both in gaining necessary reinforcement and in understanding explanations in class. I use homework to foster a sense of responsibility and to teach the necessary skills for higher education.I will accept late assignments up to 3 days late with a penalty of 15 points per day, after 3 days a 0 for that assignment will result.

I will be updating my website weekly so that your child's progress can be checked. I am also available to meet with parents EVERY day during my free period, and after school please just give me a day's notice. Unfortunately, I can only meet from 2 to 3 after school as I set aside a fair amount of time for my students. I am also unavailable to meet prior to the start of the school dayas I meet with students at this time.Although you can feel free to call me at any time throughout the year, at (xxx)xxx - xxxx ext. xxx, I check my e-mail daily, and this is oftentimes the easiest, most efficient way to reach me. You can e-mail me at amc30@geneseo.edu

If you have any concerns at any time throughout the year pleasedo not hesitate to call me, e-mail me or set up a conference. Again, I look forward to spending the year getting to know you and your child.

Sincerely,

Alison Cardoso
