What is RUSH?
Rush
is a time for the brothers of Alpha Chi Rho to meet and
greet with non-Greek Geneseo students that might be interested
in pledging our fraternity. All male students are invited
to attend our Open and Informal Rush events. If you decide to
rush AXP, you'll get an opportunity to meet the brothers
and learn more about the fraternity. There is no obligation
to pledge AXP, Crows, if you attend an Open or Informal
rush event.
Any male Geneseo Student is welcome to Rush. By rushing a fraternity, you in no way assume any responsibilities to that fraternity and a fraternity will not assume that you are going to pledge simply because you are rushing. Rushing is the process of familiarizing oneself with the fraternity, its ideals, and the Brothers. You can attend as many or as few rush events as you wish, they are all free. The rushing process is setup as follows.
Open Rush is scheduled for January 26th. Every Greek Fraternity on campus holds Open Rush on this night. They are intended to let you get a feel for the fraternities they are interested in rushing further and are considered an informal event.
Our official Informal Rush is scheduled for February 2. This consists of a gathering of the Brothers and you, along with a sorority. The informal rush is an easy atmosphere to familiarize yourself with the AXP Brothers.
If you attend Informal Rush you are welcomed back to a Formal Rush upon invitation. Invitations will be hand-delivered to you before the event. The Formal Rush is scheduled for February 9th. The formal rush consists of a dinner at not charge to you, and a party afterward. Once you are interested in the fraternity the formal rush is an opportunity for you to get a better feel for the organization and Brothers; and to voice any concerns or questions you may have.
The night of February 14th, is the scheduled date of Final Rush. You are all welcome to attend our Final Rush party. Through out the night one-on-one interviews will be conducted for you to ask us any questions you may have.
The scheduled date for Final Bids is February 16, 2007. Once the Brothers decide on who they want to become Brothers, that person is delivered a bid. A bid is delivered to you, if selected, inviting you to become a Postulant, an uneducated equal to the fraternity. You accept the bid by bringing it to the house by a designated time. The bid will instruct you to be ready to be picked up from your room at approximately 5:30 p.m. You will begin your Postulant period by having the night of your life.
The Postulant Period
Once a man is selected to become a Brother of Alpha Chi Rho, he is initiated as a Postulant. A Postulant is an uneducated equal, meaning Postulants are treated with the same respect as Brothers while they are learning about the Fraternity. This education process is what other fraternities call pledging.
During this period, Postulants will learn about the history of Alpha Chi Rho, unity between himself and his Postulant Brothers, and Brotherhood with the greater Fraternity. Most importantly, however, the Postulant's academics and extracurricular responsibilities will come first. A Postulant who does not excel academically is of no use to the Fraternity, thus, maintaining his grades is extremely important. During the Postulant period a great deal of time, generally 3 1/2 hours per day, will be spent in Milne library to ensure academic success. If more time in the library is needed at any time, the Postulant is able to spend more time in the library. The Fraternity is very concerned with academic success and expects the Postulant to do as well as possible.
Hazing. Hazing is something that is very hard to define. Some definitions will go as far to say that something as a scavenger hunt could be considered hazing. It is hard to escape stories today about fraternities in general, and the terrible things that can occur during some fraternities' pledging. Stories of serious alcohol abuse, long meaningless tasks, and forced consumption of alcohol are the most frequent. In Alpha Chi Rho we believe that these activities are not only unacceptable, but are counterproductive. We teach Postulants about how to be a Brother, not how to embarrass or hurt one another. Remember, a Postulant is an uneducated equal; AXP men believe in respect and do not treat each other this way and will not treat Postulants this way. This is not to say that the Postulant period will be easy --- it is in every way challenging. The Postulant Period is a time of personal growth where the benefits will by far outweigh the effort put forth. Throughout the Postulant Period, Postulants will be able to voice any concerns that they may have. These concerns will be seriously heard by the Postulant Committee and Brothers so that the Postulant Period is as beneficial as possible.
Throughout the Postulant Period, the Postulant's Big Brother will be there for you for guidance. Your "Big" will meet with you throughout the week to bond with you and to see how you are doing. This is a great opportunity to appreciate the Brotherhood as a whole seeing that this is a first-hand example of the close ties that the Brothers have within the Fraternity. Alpha Chi Rho is further broken into "families." During the Postulant Period, you and your family will come together at an event of the family's choice. This is yet another opportunity to bond with the Brothers and appreciate the Postulant Period. During the Postulant Period, you will be expected to join a new extracurricular activity. These activities help you become a well-rounded person --- helping you meet Alpha Chi Rho's high standard. College is a time for fun and growth; Alpha Chi Rho will help you achieve this and move further in the future.
The Postulant period can be one of the best experiences of your college career. The honor one feels as a Postulant, and especially when initiated as a Brother of Alpha Chi Rho, is in itself remarkable. As a Postulant you will make countless new friends. You will not only meet Brothers, but also the people that we as Brothers have become friends with, women who have pledged sororities, Alpha Chi Rho alumni, college faculty, and many others. However, the people you will become most familiar with are your fellow Postulant Brothers. Some may be people you have never met before or they could be a past friend of yours, in either case the bond formed between Postulant Brothers is often fast and strong, lasting throughout college and beyond. You and your Postulant Brothers will share many hours, experiences, and memories together throughout the Postulant Period.
