Speech and Hearing Clinic | |||
![]() Established in 1960, the campus Speech and Hearing Clinic offers help to individuals of all ages who are experiencing speech, language or hearing difficulty. The Clinic is an integral part of the training program of the Department of Communicative Disorders at SUNY Geneseo. The highly trained teaching and research faculty contributes its knowledge and experience to the planning and provision of client care. The Clinical StaffEach case in the clinic is serviced by an upper-level undergraduate student or a graduate student. All student clinicians have met minimum academic requirements for practicum as established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Each student clinician provides services under direct supervision of an experienced clinical supervisor who holds the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence. The supervisors observe and oversee diagnostic or therapy sessions. Besides the student clinician and the clinical supervisor, other faculty members may be called upon as consultants in their particular areas of specialization.How to Obtain ServicesReferrals are made to the Clinic from many sources, including hospital and school personnel, family doctors, and social agencies. Self-referrals are also accepted. To make a referral, or to inquire about services call (585) 245-5332. On receiving a referral or request, a diagnostic evaluation is scheduled to determine the existence and nature of the problem, and the amount and type of treatment that is required. If therapy is recommended, a therapy schedule is arranged that meets the needs of the individual client. Typically, this will involve one or two hour-long sessions each week. Small group sessions are also available when warranted.![]() Clinic CalendarThe clinic is open during the academic sessions of SUNY Geneseo, including fall, spring and summer. The Clinic is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Evening therapy hours are also available on certain days. All services are by appointment only.FeesDiagnostic and therapy services are provided for a nominal fee.LocationThe campus Clinic is located on the second floor of Sturges Hall, Room 212.![]() Services AvailableSpeech and LanguageDiagnostic and therapy services are available for the following:Articulation: Difficulty in forming the sounds of speech, leading to problems of intelligibility. Child Language: Delay in developing the understanding of spoken language or the ability to use words and sentences to express needs or thoughts successfully. Problems in this area are believed to underlie many of the difficulties that my arise in school learning. Aphasia: A loss of the ability to use/or understand language, often as a result of stroke or head injury. Stuttering: Repetitions or "blocks" in the flow of speech that disturb its smooth and fluent production. Voice: Harsh or breathy quality; difficulty speaking with sufficient loudness, nasal speech sometimes caused by structural weakness, as in cleft palate; loss of voice due to surgical removal of the larynx, requiring training in the use of esophageal speech and artificial speech devices. Augmentative Communication: To provide non-vocal means, such as the use of communication boards or electronic tools to enhance the communication of those for whom vocal speech is difficult, including the cerebral palsied. Speech and Language of the Developmentally Disabled: These special populations may require highly individualized programs incorporating help in all of the above disorder areas. Foreign Accent and Dialect Differences: Individuals who speak English as a Second Language; or dialect and desire accent reduction. Hearing:Audiological assessment to determine type and degree of hearing loss.Amplification device recommendations. Staff and students serving in the clinic comply with all state and federal regulations and internal professional guidelines regarding confidentiality. Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities: The Speech and Hearing Clinic is readily accessible to persons with disabilities. Modifications of the physical facilities have been accomplished so that wheelchairs can be accomodated and there is elevator accessibility for persons with mobility impairments.
