In memory of Susan J. Hughes
Susan J. Hughes, beloved daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on February 9, 2004, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Clifton Park, NY. Sue is survived by her parents, Ed and Judy Hughes of Clifton Park, close friend and sister, Annie, her boyfriend Chad, as well as family and friends.
Sue pledged in the Fall of 1995 and brought her overwhelming intelligence,
wit, humor, and love to the sorority. She was a close friend to many and engaged in several Clio fundraisers to help raise money and awareness for impoverished children in the surrounding Geneseo communities. Regardless of how long you knew Sue, she made you feel that you were worthy of her valued time, friendship, and personal commitment. She believed with unwavering sincerity in all people and you became stronger as a person as a consequence. You felt special and inspired in her presence. Sue’s character gave you motivation to serve yourself and others with respect and to conduct yourself with the utmost integrity. Sue’s depth as a person revealed itself
through her unfaltering support for her family and friends, and for the devotion she exemplified daily the past five and a half years to her young students.
Sue graduated from Geneseo with a BS and MS degree in elementary education
and special education in May of 1998. She continued on to teach and be named
Outstanding Beginning Special Educator in the Wake County School System in
N.C., before returning to her hometown of Clifton Park, NY, where she remained the past four and a half years teaching second grade. Sue was loved and respected throughout the entire Clifton Park teaching community where she continually helped children to grow, learn, and care for one another.
Caring for friends, family, and children permeated Sue’s life. She admired qualities in all people and appreciated those who were optimistic while understanding the complexities of human life and the growth gained by living through difficulties. Sue fought hard through any obstacles that she encountered and exuded strength when she overcame those same challenges.
Her compassion existed to lift herself and those she knew up from any issues that could depress their confidence and determination. Sue’s beauty, love, and wisdom remain solid and enduring in those that are left behind. We thank her for gracing us in life, and will miss her always.
A Clio tribute fund has been set up in Sue’s honor. As you may know, each year the
sorority continues to raise money to eventually purchase a house for its members. Alumni, sisters, and friends may choose to donate money, or designate money within a donation to fund the Susan J. Hughes Tribute fund. Once a house is purchased, the money raised in the fund will be used to create a memorial in Sue’s name in the new house. Any amount is greatly appreciated and will help to preserve the memory of our precious friend, Sue.
