If the day of the date of your birth is earlier than the 15th of the month in which you were born, look at the dilema Hillary faces that culminates with the description in the fifth paragraph on page 153. How is Hillary's problem like that of a teacher facing the demands of a state-imposed curriculum, i.e. the Regent's syllabus? Does her dealing with this problem described in the chapter give you insights into how one balances the need to address the interests of your students and how one covers the material for the test? Explain your answer.

If the day of the date of your birth is the 15th of the month or later, read the first four paragraphs of Chapter Ten. Hillary is applying Control Theory to her classroom. Prepare an essay in which you describe how Hillary is meeting the fundamental needs of her students through the completion of the project described in Chapter Ten. Give examples of specific times she meets specific needs for the archetypical student, Steven. Do you think the description in the book of the performance of the class is realistic in the classrooms of today?

5. Everyone answer the following question:

One of the main points that has been stressed in this class is that effective instruction is controlled not by the needs of the content but by the needs of the students. Describe in one paragraph how an idea from your subject-matter area might be taught where the content is most important. Describe in another paragraph, how the same idea might be taught in a class where the needs of the students are most important. Explain, in a third paragraph, which method would be better in a high school classroom and why.
