In his 2005 convocation address, SUNY Geneseo's President, Christopher Dahl, eloquently explained why education is so important: "Education gives meaning to our lives: it determines in large measure who we are and what we become . . ."

In partnership with colleagues in the College's liberal arts and sciences departments, and with professionals in public and private schools, the Ella Cline Shear School of Education is dedicated to preparing teachers committed to improving the lives of students through education. With this overarching theme and the underlying conceptual framework of our professional education programs, the School of Education communicates its commitment to producing highly qualified teachers scholars who are constructivist educators and reflective practitioners.

The School of Education offers undergraduate programs leading to initial certification in Early Childhood, Childhood, Childhood with Special Education, and Adolescence Education.

Our graduate programs in Early Childhood, Literacy (B-6 and 5-12), and Adolescence Education prepare teachers to become accomplished educators and lead to professional certification.

All of the teacher certification programs of the Ella Cline Shear School of Education are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As an indication of the high quality of Geneseo's programs, NCATE President Arthur Wise, in his letter notifying the College of its accreditation decision, noted "Special congratulations are in order because the Unit Accrediting Board has cited no official areas for improvement relative to any of the standards. This is a very rare distinction and an indication of the high quality of Geneseo's teacher education programs.
