Objectives for this Session
- Reference Service at the Circulation Desk
- Get a basic knowledge of where and how to find scholarly material in various Library Catalogs
- Learn to help students make IDS requests
- Use & get acquainted with appropriate tools to access appropriate resources
Reference Responsibilities of the Service Desk for Circ Staff & Students
1. Understand Service Expectations
- Communication techniques
- Milne Library Philosophy of Service
- Behavioral guidelines for customer service (approachability, interest, & Follow-up)
2. Assist with basic services available through the Milne Library Website (logging into requesting materials through IDS, renewals, course reserves, etc...)
- How to navigate the library webpage
- How to request materials via IDS
3. Perform catalog searches if given an author, book title, or call number
- Navigate the library's catalogs (Beta Catalog, WorldCat Local, & GLOCAT)
- Interpret a catalog record: call numbers, material locations, requesting materials from storage & via IDS
4. Record all questions in LibStats and review LibStats to keep abreast of Frequently Asked Questions
