Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be an English major to be in English Club? Absolutely not! While many members of English Club are English majors, minors, and concentrations, it is not at all a requirement. The only true common thread amongst all members of English Club is a deep love of reading and writing.

What do you do in English Club meetings? During the fall semester, Geneseo English Club meetings are somewhat informal. Members are free to bring in any pieces on which they have been working either just to share or to receieve constructive criticism from other members. Geneseo English Club members may also bring in their favorite works to discuss. Throughout the spring semester, English Club members primarily work on reading student submissions for the literary magazine, Opus. (For more information on Opus, go to the "Opus at a Glance" area of this website.) After all submissions have been read and evaluated, Geneseo English Club members spend the majority of the remainder of the semester designing and preparing Opus for publication.

Does English Club do anything outside of weekly meetings? English Club is quite active outside of weekly meetings. Members are invited to participate in small "field trips" to areas such as Ithaca and Buffalo to attend (and possibly even participate in) performances and poetry slams. Geneseo English Club members have also gone to art museums and on other cultural adventures. Additionally, English Club works within the Geneseo English community to design and distribute merchandise. Geneseo English Club has also hosted highly-attended talent shows and open mic nights.
