Think about the following: How is your favorite Hollywood star doing? What is good trendy clothing for you? What are standards that define a beautiful person in our culture? How do you learn about people living in foreign countries, though you never have a personal experience with them? We all learn these from mass-mediated messages, such as TV, the Internet, and magazines. Inspired by Jane Jacob's seminal work and book on The Death and Life of Great American Cities, O'Connell started investing in Red Hook waterfront properties and rebuilding commercial sites and apartments. His efforts paid off and Red Hook is now a thriving urban community. Most recently, he returned to the Genesee Valley and started investing in run down properties in Mt. Morris. Another success story is unfolding as O'Connell's work is impacting people and families and communities in Upstate New York. One person can make an amazing difference. At the center of most sustainability education is a focus on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Is this even feasible in a country operating under a system Oliver James calls "selfish capitalism"?

How to Grow Organic Herbs for Culinary Purposes for a Campus Dining Hall (Jade)
Tuesday, March 27, 2:30-3:30 pm
MacVittie College Union Room 319

In order to emphasize the need to support local food production, proponents of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) movement have long used the example; a tomato usually travels about 1,500 miles from where it is grown to your salad bowl. Yet few contemplate how many miles herbs have traveled. The vast majority of herbs that American companies are using and selling do not come from within the U.S. Most are imported (some estimates range over 95%) from Eastern Europe, India, China, Mexico and many third-world countries. Many herbs are grown using pesticides and are fumigated when they are brought into the US. Given these facts, it is critical to ask questions about where our herbs come from and whether or not our choices are sustainable. (Courtesy of Linda Conroy of Moonwise Herbs)

Beyond the 3 Rs: An Education for Living in Ethical and Sustainable Ways (Jade Certificate Requirement)
Monday, April 2, 2:30-3:30 pm
MacVittie College Union Room 319

At the center of most sustainability education is a focus on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Unfortunately, most of us, because it's easier, put recycling at the center of our efforts rather than use it as a last resort. What would it look like if we all believed -- and acted as if -- it was our ethical obligation not to consume, but to conserve; to, as the catch-phrase puts it, live simply so that others may simply live? Is this even feasible in a country operating under a system Oliver James calls "selfish capitalism"?
