GOLD Mission Statement

The Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development program seeks to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities in service to the college and the global community. Our mission is accomplished through education, development, and training of students in an extensive series of personal development programs, institutes, leadership certificates, service learning, volunteer work, and active engagement in college and community life.

From Preservation to Conservation to Sustainability and Intergenerational Equity (Jade Certificate Requirement)
Monday, February 13, 2:30-3:30 pm

MacVittie College Union Room 319

This workshop will help participants better understand the terms and concepts surrounding environmental issues in general and sustainability specifically. In order to be a successful leader in sustainability it is critical to have working definitions of the important terms that are used by academics, politicians, and the media. We will specifically discuss the differences between preservation, conservation, and sustainability. Particular attention will be given to different definitions and concepts of sustainability with a discussion of both intergenerational equity and intragenerational equity.

Emotional Intelligence and Its Impact on Leadership (Silver) (Business PD Event)

IQ and technical skills are entry-level qualifications, but it is emotional intelligence that leaders must possess to be successful. This session will include a video and substantive discussion on emotional intelligence and its impact on the practice of leadership. We will draw from Daniel Goleman's book on this topic. His research indicates that the most effective leaders have one important thing in common: they have a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Critical Evaluation of Energy Use Choices (Jade)

How much and what kind of energy we choose to use will have a direct impact on the future trajectory of global climate change. There are many possible routes to "carbon footprint" reduction, however it is often difficult to choose the most effective option. We will examine methods for evaluating the impact of different technologies and/or lifestyle changes on your personal contribution to climate change.

You've heard the term used, but what does it really mean? Does it mean all white people are racist? (no) What can you do about it? (a lot) This interactive workshop will examine some of the cultural and social dynamics of whiteness- yes, white people have culture too- in the hopes of raising awareness about issues of power, privilege, and access in the United States. Please bring a pencil and an open mind to this provocative session.

BaFa BaFa is a game designed to help people understand the challenges of social interaction across cultural groups. This highly interactive game has been used by thousands of groups all over the world to teach an appreciation of group differences and cross-cultural conflicts. Pearls of Wisdom from Successful Leaders: My Life in the Justice System Interpreting State and Federal Laws (Emerald) or (Diamond)

Richard C. Wesley earned his undergraduate degree from SUNY Albany and his law degree from Cornell Law School. He connected with SUNY Geneseo as a young attorney in Geneseo through the SA legal service to students. He represented Livingston County area as an elected member of the New York State Assembly and was elected to the New York State Supreme Court.. Governor Mario Cuomo nominated him and the New York Senate approved his appointment to the Fourth Department of the Appellate Division. Governor Pataki appointed him to New York's highest court as the Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals and President George W. Bush appointed him with unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate to his current position on the U.S. Court of Appeals Second Circuit. Wesley will share his story and insights on our state and federal justice system.

Diigo is a powerful research and collaboration tool that can help you save, organize, and share what you discover on the web. Students will learn how to save, annotate, tag and share their favorite sites while creating their own personal archive.
