• You must have taken at least two courses with me, including one at the 300 level
• You must have earned an A- or higher in the 300 level course, including an A- or higher on your paper for the 300 level course
• I must know your name on sight
• You should have been an active participant in class discussions
• I should have a fairly good idea of your extra-curricular interests and activities

Research Assistant Opportunities

I consult for a number of organizations on issues of democratization, refugees, and post-conflict transitions. I am always pleased to work with students on these projects. In general, I reserve paid positions for students whose written work and research skills I have seen first-hand in an upper-division course or who have demonstrated their commitment and smarts as a volunteer first. Please note, I have occasionally been burned by students who volunteered to work on a project and then found themselves too busy to complete the work we agreed on, which makes me very unhappy. For volunteers, I can only offer the prospects of a nice letter of recommendation if you do a good job, so please consider whether you can really commit to the project.
