Agreement for Conducting Research in
Dr. Hartvigsen’s Lab

Below are the guidelines for student research in Dr. Hartvigsen’s lab. Students are responsible for each aspect of the described policy unless otherwise noted. Failure to complete any aspect of the guidelines represents a breach of this agreement.

  1. A research project begins with a discussion of a problem. This should originate with the student but also may emerge from conversations with students and faculty. Students are expected to buy a stiff, bound composition notebook or equivalent and record all ideas, activities, meetings, and data.
  2. Students then read. It is Dr. Hartvigsen’s responsibility to help guide students toward relevant resources and pertinent literature. It is the student’s responsibility to actually obtain literature and read. Students should schedule weekly meetings with Dr. Hartvigsen to discuss readings.
  3. A proposal of research plans is expected to be completed before the actual research begins. This will include a review of pertinent literature, a clear outline of the purpose and importance of research, and a detailed description of proposed methods, materials required, and an estimated time line for the completion of the project. The final version will be filed and will be available for other students to read.
  4. Upon approval of the research proposal the student becomes a research "candidate." Necessary materials should be requisitioned. Meetings should be scheduled at a mutually agreed upon frequency.
  5. At the completion of the project candidates are expected to submit
    1. a paper to the SUNY Geneseo Journal of Science and Mathematics at the completion of the project. See the Journal's web site for specific format. Papers submitted to other journals will satisfy this requirement;
    2. a copy of the data in electronic form.
  6. Data are the property of the candidate. Ownership, however, can be transferred to Dr. Hartvigsen either
    1. voluntarily, or
    2. involuntarily, if lack of contact occurs for a period of six months after completion of the project and failure to communicate with Dr. Hartvigsen about continued interest and progress toward publishing data.

I agree with these expectations for completing research in Dr. Hartvigsen’s lab.
