Student Awards at Regional and National Competition

 

• Moran, J.P. and H.J. Hoops. 1995. Flagellar apparatus structure in the colonial Volvocales: Pleodorina californica and Volvox spermatosphaera. Presented at the 34th Northeast Algal Symposium, April 29-30 and published in the Northeast Algal Symposium Abstracts:18.

James was the honorable mention (= first runner up) in the student poster competition. This is significant because most of the student presentations were graduate students, many from research universities.

• Widjaja, A., A.E. Cocina, and H.J. Hoops. 1999. The mechanism of chemoaccumulation in Astrephomene gubernaculifera, a colonial green alga. Presented at the 38th Annual Northeast Algal Symposium at the Plymouth MA April 17-18, 1999, and published in the Northeast Algal Symposium Abstracts:33.

Amy was presented with the first ever winner of the Northeast Algal Society President’s Award for undergraduate research based on this work.

• Shelley, A. and H.J. Hoops. 2000. The mechanism of phototaxis in Volvox section Volvox. Presented at the 39th Annual Northeast Algal Symposium at Whispering Pines, Rhode Island April 8-9, 2000, and published in the Northeast Algal Symposium Abstracts:30.

Andrea was the first runner up for the Northeast Algal Society President’s Awards for undergraduate research based on this work.

Gallo, A. and H.J. Hoops. 2002. Caged acetate as a probe for the mechanism of chemoaccumulation in the colonial green alga Astrephomene gubernaculifera. Presented at the 41st Annual Northeast Algal Symposium at Durham, NH, April 20-21 2002, and published in the Northeast Algal Symposium Abstracts:

Anthony was awarded the Northeast Algal Society President’s Award for undergraduate research based on this work.

• Stickels, S. Flagellar mechanism of phototactic turning in Volvox. (Spring, 1996).Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 1996.

Scott was a co-winner of the best poster presentation in the sciences.

 

Binder, D.S and A.E. Cocina. Chemotaxis in the colonial green alga Astrephomene gubernaculifera.. Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 1998.

Dave and Amy were co-recipients of the Mark Diamond Research Award for their oral research presentation in Biology.

 

• Simmons, L.M. The rate and direction of fluid flow around swimming Volvox carteri. Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 1999.

Laura was the recipient of the Mark Diamond Research Award for her poster research presentation in Biology

•Hurchla, M.A. Swimming behavior of Astrephomene gubernaculifera under changing acetate concentrations. Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 2001.

Michelle was the recipient of the Mark Diamond Research Award for her poster research presentation in Biology.

 

• Gifford, S.M. Cell signaling in the colonial algae Astrephomene gubernaculifera. Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 2001.

Shaun was the recipient of the Mark Diamond Research Award for his oral research presentation in Biology.

 

• Pike, M. Astrephomene gubernaculifera is chemoattracted to nitrate.. Presented in the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the Natural Sciences, Spring 2003.

Matt was the recipient of the Mark Diamond Research Award for his poster research presentation in Biology.

 

• Vollo, J. The role of tropomodulin in the intestinal microvillus of C. elegans. Presented at GREAT day, Spring 2008.
