Recently, he was awarded a grant from the Coleman Foundation to offer an innovative course on entrepreneurship at SUNY Geneseo.

Markulis has been teaching at Geneseo for over 22 years. Over this time he has refined the techniques he uses for “active learning” in the classroom. One technique is case facilitation, which replaces the traditional case presentation project. In case facilitation each student team not only has to analyze and present the case, but “teach it” as well. Markulis also pairs student teams with area businesses to give students an opportunity to apply the theories they learn in class to a real world situation. Teams serve essentially as consultants to the businesses. The teams have to make a formal presentation of their findings and recommendations. As a result of his teaching activities, Professor Markulis was awarded the BAC  Supported Professorship for Active Learning in the Classroom in 2003. Through innovative strategies Dr. Markulis has ensured that students in his classes gain valuable knowledge, as he applies the principle of “learning through doing.”
