Required Course Materials

Textbook: Solid State Physics, by Ashcroft and Mermin.

This is one of the "bibles" of solid state physics.  It was published a long time ago, but is still very good.  This book is used for both undergraduate and graduate level courses, so obviously we'll be stearing clear of some of the more advanced topics.  If you go to graduate school, you will very likely find this book useful there.

By the way, this is the book I have used in the recent past.  Partly, I am sticking with it there has been significant interest in the "semiclassical" view of metals, and this is the only text I know that has a good presentation of that.

Optional Course Materials

Another commonly used textbook is Introduction to Solid State Physics , by C. Kittel.  It is in no way required for this course, but you may find it useful for an alternate perspective on some topics.
