Textbook: The Science of Sound, 3rd edition, by Rossing, Moore, and Wheeler.
This is a good book, but it’s not a perfect match for this course. It is very brief on a few subjects. We will cover less than half of the book.
Study Guide & Lab Manual: The Sound of Physics, by McLean. This will be very difficult to get anywhere except Sundance books.
The Study Guide part helps to fill in the gaps in the textbook. The Lab Manual part will be necessary to complete the labs.
Lab notebook: Specifically: made by Avery, their style 43-591. There will be used notebooks available for FREE on the fist day in lab.
For new ones, it may be awkward to get anywhere except Sundance books. The Avery website doesn't seem to list any notebooks at all, although a Google search finds other vendors who sell them.
Calculator: A calculator that handles logarithms (“LOG” key). This need not be very expensive. You don’t need one of the expensive graphing calculators for this course.
All Fall 2007 incoming students who expect to graduate in 2011 (or later) are required to bring a laptop computer. See the Geneseo Notebook Requirement page for details, including special purchase plans.
Since this course includes many non-Freshmen, there will be no class activities which require a laptop. Laboratories do make use of laptops to analyze data; computers will be available in the lab, but you may find it convenient to bring your own.
