The Mad Hatter Meets Victorian England
Amanda Senft, Maggie Bangs, Sarah Smithers
Our project attempts to reinforce how different from everyday Victorian England Carroll's Wonderland really was, by imagining a scenario in which the Mad Hatter has accidentally fallen into Alice's world. Among other things, he has a hard time understanding proper manners, education, and politics. This all comes together to create a very funny scence that would seem as ridiculous to a character in Wonderland as Alice's scences there seem to us.
Goblin Market
Jen McNulty, Danielle Blanch
Through making a film we recreated the scene of Christina Rossetti's "Goblin Market." Originally we hoped to film using the arboretum, but unfortunately due to weather we moved our set indoors, using handmade backdrops to place on the walls and film in or resident hall main lounge. Using friends as actors playing the roles of the Goblin, we created masks and tried to create mood lighting to set apart the different scenes within "Goblin Market." Instead of using a traditional filming style we thought to make a slide show and show the movie frame by frame with a narration of the scene in the backdrop, along with music. Each frame tries to represent different actions and moments, scenes from the poem, with blank slides in between showing transition from one part to the next.
Laura and Lizzie: On Credit Cards
Theresa Kane and Tammy Seidberg
We decided to do a modern interpretation of Christina Rossetti's poem, "Goblin Market." Since there isn't a clearly defined subject of the poem (some say sisterhood, sexuality or capitalism), we did a MasterCard commercial to show the dangers of spending uncontrollably. We took the "forbidden fruit" in the poem to represent the dangers of spending money you don't have. Lizzie (Tammy) is the voice of reason, and Laura (Theresa) is the curious sister who is tempted by the MasterCard, and spends out of control. The commercial ends similarly to the poem...the sisters reconcile, and their bond is strengthened.
Advice from a Caterpillar
Leslie Manz, Jennifer Estleford, Melissa Alessandra, Amanda Browning
This video explains the scene in Alice and Wonderland where Alice meets the caterpillar. The beginning is what actually happens in the book and then the second round is our interpretation of what it really means.
