Officer Candidate School
|
Signal Corps OCS at Ft. Gordon had been formed by a cadre of Infantry OCS types from Ft. Benning. The Signal Corps needed to train its own officers to meet war-time communication needs. But by allowing Infantry Officers to influence its beginnings, Signal Corps OCS seemed to have abdicated its main responsibility and ended up with a hybrid program. Part Signal, part Infantry, it was without doubt harder than Benning and with a much smaller retention percentage. Along with having to cope with the severe physical and emotional pressures adopted from the rigorous Infantry program, complex technical academic subjects dealing with radio and telephone communications were required to be mastered as well. It was an impossible task that was met by over two thousand young men out of many more who tried over a less than two-and-a-half year period. Our class had started with well over a hundred and twenty. We graduated fifty-five. Several of these were retreads from other classes. |
