REQUIREMENTS
ELEMENTARY/SECONDARY PROGRAMS
 
 

I. Knowledge of Learners, School and Community
A. The student teacher will gather and report data pertinent to the learners derived from school records, the school and community environment and utilize these resources in teaching.
B. The student teacher will consult and report on interaction with a variety of resource people available in the school.
C. Describe developmental level of pupils taught.
D. Collect information on the school and community resources available to support the curriculum.
 
 
 

II. Planning
A. Lesson Plans:
1. Daily plans are required for each lesson taught. As student teachers progress, plans may become more abbreviated. However, the objective, steps and questions for each lesson should be stated in outline form. Evaluation of pupil learning and teaching performance are required.
2. The student teacher will demonstrate background knowledge adequate to support the concepts being presented.
3. The student teacher will plan to incorporate, as appropriate, a wide range of commercial, teacher-made, real-life, vicarious and simulated resources.
B. Plan Book/Block Plan:
1. Student teachers will maintain a plan book or block plan during both placements. Supervisors will review the plan book/block plan and may ask to see plans or materials to support plan book entries.
C. Long Range Plans
1. The student teacher will develop a sequence of lesson plans following the unit format.
2. The student teacher will gather and use data on the school curriculum, state course of study, and plan lessons within that framework.

 
 

III. Teaching
A. Lessons
1. Lessons will incorporate a variety of effective motivational procedures.
2. A variety of teaching strategies which were learned in the professional education courses will be included in lessons taught during student teaching.
B. Teacher-Made Materials
1. Student teachers should use a variety of aural, visual and concrete aids to support lessons. Copies of student teacher-developed worksheets, samples or descriptions of games, learning centers or other motivational activities should be retained by the student teacher and will be reviewed by the college supervisor. The student teacher will teach creatively within the opportunities present, including original learning activities and materials in lessons.
C. Projects
1. Student teachers should develop at least two major instructional projects after discussion with the cooperating teacher and supervisor. The following are illustrative:
a. Bulletin board supporting curriculum
b. L.A.P. pack (Learning Activity Packet)
c. Learning center
d. A game or manipulative with directions and an assessment strategy
e. Study guides for reading or content area
f. An activity which utilizes community resources to support curriculum; for example, plan field trip, bring in speaker or use local resources as a basis for instruction when appropriate.
D. Responsibility
1. The student teacher will gradually increase teaching responsibilities, culminating in a week of full-time responsibility.
 
 
 

 

IV. Evaluation
A. The student teacher will carry out objective and on-going evaluation of pupil achievement and social behavior.
B. The student teacher will complete a written evaluation of his/her own teaching effectiveness.
V. Log
A. Supervisors may require students to keep a log. Log entries should be made outside the class.
