Alison and Chris

GSDC History

Alison, the founder of the Geneseo Swing Dance Club, started dancing in Geneseo, taking lessions from Gloria and Kent on Main St., just off of campus. She was immediately hooked, and started finding other venues in which to dance. Most prominently, this was through the Rochester Swing Dance Network, which still operates today, holding dances every month.

After a local fundraising dance in the Spring of 1999, Alison became aware of a growing interest in swing dancing in Geneseo, and with a little prompting from her teacher Gloria, she started filling out the forms to create the Geneseo Swing Dance Club.

The club started with a full executive board, and they emphatically started to spread dancing throughout the Geneseo community through lessions and dances. They also introduced those who were interested to the larger dance network in Rochester.

Over the last decade, the club has had its ups and downs. It gains members, but watches as they move on at graduation. Every year there have been enough to maintain a full executive board, though, and the club manages to continue on to the next year. The more experienced members pass on whatever knowledge they have, and encourage the newer members to continue coming to the weekly meetings as well as learn more on their own.

With the enthusiasm of the current members, and a little luck, the club will continue for years to come.
