-------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview : The purpose of INTD 302 is to prepare pre-service
teachers of secondary mathematics for the student teaching internship. Throughout this course discussions will
center on methods of planning, teaching, evaluating and managing mathematics
classes. In addition, the theme professionalism will be
emphasized. Students in INTD 302 are
expected to demonstrate a maturity and dedication to mathematics education prior to being assigned a student
teaching placement. While it is common
that students may not be entirely sure that secondary teaching is their career
goal, all students who enter the student teaching semester are expected to
proceed as though this is their goal.
Goals can change, but when you engage in teaching students, anything
less than a full commitment shortchanges those students. If you are unable to make this level of
commitment, you should postpone INTD 302, and hence student teaching, until you
are prepared to do so.
Peer Lessons: Each student will be required to present two
"peer lessons" to other class members in order to demonstrate their
developing pedagogical skills. Dates for
these lessons are listed on the attached tentative schedule. Students who are not presenting a peer lesson
on a specific day will serve as the class for their peer who is
presenting. Failure to attend class on
one of these days will result in a loss of one letter on your peer lesson
grade.
INTD 301: Students enrolled in INTD 302 must enroll
concurrently in INTD 301 -- Topics in Secondary Mathematics. INTD 301 will provide in depth discussions of
the mathematical topics that comprise the secondary curriculum. Each pre-service teacher is assumed to have
mastery of the material in the middle and high school syllabi. Reading assignments for each of the two
classes will apply to both.
Participation : Each student enrolled in INTD 302
must have completed a participation
experience prior to enrolling in the
class. This participation will provide a
basis for class discussions and some assignments. The materials that you assembled during this
time and submitted to your EDUC 204 instructor will be helpful in composing
your pre-service portfolio which will be discussed in class and submitted to me
later in the semester.
Attendance : Your attendance in class is important and expected. You are about to
enter an internship during which you
will serve as a role model to a large number of students. Your commitment to learning should, by now,
be very serious. Poor attendance on the
part of pre-service teachers will be interpreted as a lack of commitment toward
your professional preparation. Class
participation will comprise 15% of your final grade. Attendance will influence this portion of
your grade. Absences will be excused
only if arrangements are made prior to the class or in documented
emergency situations. If you are forced
to miss a class, phone me at 245-5485 or contact me by e-mail at: wallace@geneseo.edu .

Grading - Your grade in INTD 302 will be comprised of five parts:
1.
Your peer lesson average (20%)
2.
Your written assignment average, including lesson plans, group projects, and
position papers (15%).
3.
Your pre-service portfolio[2]
grade (10%)
4.
Your class Participation grade (15%)
5.
Your exam average (20%)
6. Your Research Project Grade (20%)
At the end of the semester a
weighted numerical average will be computed using the percentages shown above. Letter grades will then be assigned using the
following table:
