WGSU Operating Principles & Practices

WGSU is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to SUNY Geneseo and operated by the Department of Communication in service to the campus and surrounding community. The following principles and standards of on-air practice are intended to meet FCC requirements and responsibly operate the station in a manner which reflects credit on SUNY Geneseo.

WGSU Operating Principles

WGSU will:

  1. Operate within the limits of all FCC and other applicable rules and regulations.
  2. Strive for the highest standards of professionalism and excellence.
  3. Operate in a manner which brings credit to SUNY Geneseo.
  4. Develop programming which meets the needs of the community within the context of the academic mission of SUNY Geneseo and the Department of Communication.
  5. Operate in a fiscally responsible manner.

WGSU Standards of On-Air Practice

In support of the operating principles, the following standards and practices have been adopted. WGSU will:

  1. Not operate or broadcast in a manner that could lead to FCC fines or violate FCC rules.
  2. Not broadcast offensive, obscene, or indecent materials.
  3. Not broadcast material that is libelous or slanderous.

Responsibilities of On-Air Talent

Persons who qualify for and are entrusted with on-air shifts are responsible for ensuring that all FCC rules and regulations and WGSU station policies/standards are enforced during their shifts.

On-air talent:

  1. Must adhere and ensure that any guests adhere to FCC and WGSU regulations, operating principles and standards.
  2. Are personally responsible for paying and fines or judgments that may result from their failure to enforce FCC and/or WGSU regulations.
  3. Must take immediate action to prevent inappropriate material from being broadcast.
  4. Must report any programming discrepancies or rules/standards violations to the programming director as soon as possible.
  5. Must take meter readings and conduct EAS testing as required by the FCC.
