Web Applications

A web-based application is any application that uses a website as the interface or front-end. Users can easily access the application from any computer connected to the Internet using a standard browser. This contrasts with traditional desktop applications, which are installed on a local computer.

Benefits of a web app

  • Easier to develop
  • More useful for your users
  • Less compatibility issues (almost zero for how we develop them)
  • Easier to install, maintain and keep secure
  • Easier to grow as you grow

More an more commercial systems that we buy for use on campus are web apps. We also have the ability to develop custom apps for specific needs. Our office has developed a set of common tools in the PHP programming language that enable us to develop and deploy a web app rather quickly. We currently have close to a dozen in use or development. We are also looking into adopting the Laravel framework for future (and existing) web application development. This move away from custom tools should speed up development, increase security and shadow what CIT is doing with web applications it develops / supports.
