Advice for Transfer Students

Leverage your Experiences!

The Career Design Center guides transfer students in reflecting on connecting their past experiences to their future goals. Staff counselors and peer Career Mentors will teach you how to format your resume and cover letter to best display your activities at each of your colleges, along with your volunteer or work experience. You will learn how to positively portray, in graduate school personal statements or interviews, your decision to transfer. Nervous about discussing this during an interview?  Schedule a mock interview with a staff counselor! You will learn how to positively present your decision to transfer to Geneseo.

Dress for Success

Utilize the Career Design Center's Encore clothes closet! Rent men’s and women’s business attire free of charge to be prepared for your event, interview, presentation, etc.

Networking

If you’re a transfer student, you’re not alone!

  • 132 out of the 270 students who transferred to SUNY Geneseo in fall 2016 had earned an associate’s degree.
  • 80% of the 97 spring 2017 transfer students came from 2-year school 24 came from 4-year colleges

You might find it helpful to network with other previous transfer students who are now successful professionals. The Career Design Center can help you identify those Geneseo alumni who transferred here from other colleges.
