Reconstruct Site Electric & Steam Infrastructure at Sturges Quad Area

Project 061000

This project will provide underground utility upgrades in and around the Sturges Quad area. The underground utilities that will be replaced and/or improved are: electrical, steam, water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer & telecommunication infrastructure. Surface improvements will include replacing old asphalt sidewalks to new concrete sidewalks, improvements to roadways, new lawns and landscaping. The construction limits expand from Schrader Hall to the West all the way to the Integrated Science Center to the East, and from University Drive to the North all the way to College Drive to the South.

Due to the overall size of the construction area and particular campus events that will happen over the construction duration, the project will be broken down to construction phases. Most phases will be overlapping, meaning one phased area may not be completed prior to moving on to the next phased area. The phases have been formed based on a start date and an end date. The contractor will be required to provide the appropriate levels of construction crews to work each of the phased areas during the time durations.

During each of the construction phases, there will be closings of building entrances where construction work will be happening. Alternate building entrances will need to be used during those durations. This will be the same circumstance for pedestrian walkways. Alternate walkways will need to be used when areas are closed off for construction.

In addition to underground utilities being replaced and new site surface improvements, this project will also replace various old outdated building main electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers and switches. The buildings that will be affected and will experience scheduled power outages will include: Clark A, Heating Plant, College Union, Sturges Hall, South Hall, Welles Hall, Fraser Hall, Wadsworth Auditorium, Erwin Hall, Blake Hall, Newton Hall, Lauderdale Health Center and Jones Hall. The power outages are planned to be short durations of 4 hours or less. In order to keep buildings operational with electricity during the 3-4 weeks duration of replacing a building’s main electrical equipment, temporary external generators will be strategically placed on campus to provide alternate power to buildings during such equipment replacements.

This project is a two-year construction project with an anticipation completion in the fall of 2018.
