While Geneseo Provost Carol Long taught English out west before moving to New York, she was an elite whitewater guide, running the most extreme class of rapids on earth.

She navigated Wild Sheep Rapids deep in Hell's Canyon many times. Once, the water thrust her into a rock and pulled her over and under. The moment right before she flipped was caught on film. (Photo provided, circa 1970s).

"I genuinely believe a lot of the things I absorbed and learned in that set of experiences (as a whitewater guide) of my life play into my leadership style now," says Long, who oversees 21 academic departments, all of Geneseo's libraries, research and computing. "You learn how to deal crises differently because other people are dependent on you. You have to develop a lot of trust."
