Home Away from Home Respite Center

Our mission is to provide respite care in order to assist families in Livingston County who have a loved one dealing with a memory related illness. We offer a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. Trained college student volunteers work to provide the best care possible to our participants in order to give family members time to attend to their own needs. This also gives participants a chance to socially interact with others and to receive one-on-one attention from student volunteers while sharing in our many daily activities.

What We Do

Our intergenerational program connects trained college students with older adults to enrich the lives of everyone involved. We offer a wide variety of daily activities for all to enjoy and in which everyone can participate, including:

  • Chair Yoga and Aerobics
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Games and Puzzles
  • Cooking Projects
  • Special celebrations and events
  • Visits from a therapy dog

Caregiver Testimonial: "I was surprised with the feeling I had the first time I left my Mother-in-Law at the center. I had peace of mind. I knew she was safe while I took care of some errands."

Geneseo Interfaith Center, 11 Franklin St., Geneseo, NY 14454

Tuesdays and Thursdays - 10:00 am  - 2:00 pm (during the college academic year. Summer programming hours may differ.)

The program is primarily staffed by SUNY Geneseo student volunteers. Each student receives respite care training which gives an overview of memory-related diseases, communication techniques, as well as tools for dealing with challenging situations. Our program aims to have at least one student per client so all care recipients receive personal attention. There is professional, on-site supervision at all times.

How to Get Involved

SUNY Geneseo student volunteers are a key component of Home Away from Home. Our program trains students to be effective respite volunteers that provide companionship, engage our clients, and plan and facilitate fun activities for the group. If you are interested in the an internship or volunteering please email:
