Past Musical Theatre Productions

Performance Opportunities Abound

While incredible growth takes place in our studios and classrooms every day, transformational experiences also come to life on our stages and recital halls. We know that a crucial part of your arts education happens in front of an audience, and we’re proud to provide our musical theatre majors with ample performance opportunities throughout each semester. Our productions feature classic, neo-classic, and contemporary scores, as well as staging experiences ranging from fully-produced musicals to staged readings, and everything in between. The broad ranges of music styles and facility setups teach our students to tell a musical story in a wide variety of settings.

We produce three exciting, distinct shows each year.

Innovation and Creativity in the Wadsworth Auditorium
Each winter, our B.A. and B.P.S. majors join the Geneseo student body to perform in a fully-produced musical in the Wadsworth Auditorium. We transform this space in a creative, fresh way so that audiences can be up close and personal with our storytelling. Lovingly called the “Wadsworth White Box”, this venue takes on new life as an intimate, innovative playing space is carved from the beautiful auditorium’s bare bones.

Collaboration and Artistry in the Alice Austin Theatre
In our proscenium space, we honor the Alice Austin Theatre’s stage in its large-scale, presentational form every spring. Musicals in this space are a fantastic opportunity for our students to experience what it’s like to perform for a larger audience in a more traditional setup. Our B.A and B.P.S. majors not only get the chance to learn from our faculty members while working on the spring show, but also to partner with guest directors and designers for a taste of what future professional rehearsal processes might include.

The spring musical is the pinnacle of collaboration and cooperation for our musical theatre students. Peers across disciplines and majors come together with faculty, administrators, designers, and guest artists to make our large-scale musical a success. This emphasis on collaboration not only opens our students’ eyes to the power of empathic, communicative teamwork, it also provides our musical theatre students with backstage learning opportunities. B.A. and B.P.S. majors are encouraged to explore educational experiences behind the scenes, including learning from our faculty in stage management, scenic design, electrics, costumes, sound, dramaturgy, and more.

Storytelling and Discovery in the Doty Recital Hall
Each fall, our students participate in our popular “Page To Stage” program, a stripped-down presentation that foregrounds the singing actor’s preparation and work. This performance opportunity is only available to musical theatre majors as we prioritize honest storytelling and process. “Page To Stage” incorporates light technical, costume, and prop elements to support our students, but the primary focus of this experience is the actor’s performance itself. While we value clear, bold storytelling in all of our shows, recitals, and performances, “Page To Stage” provides our students with the opportunity to delve more deeply into the emotional, psychological, and vocal lives of their characters. B.A. and B.P.S. majors always experience exciting moments of growth, self-discovery, and transformation in this innovative, hands-on process.
