Instructor Step-by-Step Guide:

Grading Rubrics

Instructors have the ability to create and utilize Grading Rubrics within their courses to assign rubric-based grades.  Grading Rubrics can be created for use with dropbox submissions, as well as targeted to essay and/or short answer questions on assessments. Grading Rubrics can be made viewable to students prior to submitting a dropbox assigment or answering an assessment question.  In addition, Grading Rubrics can be copied from one course to another.  The steps below provide instruction on how to create a Grading Rubric, connect a Grading Rubric to a dropbox submission and/or questions on an assessment, and grade using a Grading Rubric.

Creating a Grading Rubric

You can create a Grading Rubric within a course or in your Personal Learning Object Repository (LOR).  The benefit of using the LOR, is that you can link your Grading Rubric to multiple destinations (multiple dropboxes and assessments in multiple courses), while retaining one centralized location for editing.

1. Enter your course or your Personal Learning Object Repository (LOR).  Click on the Manage Tab.

2. In the Data Management box to the right, click the Rubric Manager link.

3. Click the Add link in the upper left corner, then select one of the following:

  • Create new rubric:  Create a new rubric from scratch
  • Copy existing rubric:  Create a new rubric by copying an existing rubric from a course, group or repository
  • Link to existing rubric:  Create a new rubric by linking to an existing rubric from a repository

4. For creating a new rubric, you will be presented with the window titled "Create Rubric Wizard".  For Step 1 of the Wizard, enter the information shown in the figure below and choose Next Step.

  • Step 2 of the Wizard:
    • You will be presented with an outline of your rubric.  You can click on the light grey boxes (row and column headings) to change the text or percentages in those areas.
      • For Criteria (rows), the percentage indicates the weight of the criterion and the total criteria add to 100%
      • For Achievement Level (columns),  the percentage indicates the lowest grade a student must receive to meet that achievement level
    • Click on the white boxes within the rubric to enter the characteristics of each criterion and achievement level.  The percentages within the white boxes indicate what percent of the total score that box is worth, as determined by the weight of the criterion and percent of achievement level
    • Click Next Step
