How to Participate in a Discussion Forum

Your Instructor may assign and grade your participation in Discussion Forums, as a means to share and discuss information and opinions within their course.  Access to Discussion Forums can be  through the Course Materials tab, Communicate tab and/or the course Guide.  Review the information below on how to participate in a Discussion Forum:

 

  • Click on the Discussion Forum title in the Course Materials tab, Communicate tab and/or the course Guide
  • Review the Instructor's Directions before moving forward.  Instructors may provide specific participation "rules", guidelines and etiquette
  • Instructors may customize access by enabling peer review, limit New Posts by teams and more, to enhance the overall experience
  • Most Discussion Forums will automatically display in Threaded View.  Click the down arrow next to the New Post button for more View options. Change the view option to Nested View, (see Figure One, point A) to display all posted detailed content (not just title and author) and for additional functionality
  • New posts appear first and decend by date and time
  • To make a New Post:
    • Click the New Post button (see Figure One, point B)
    • Enter a Post Title (required) and enter or cut/paste your comments in the HTML editor message box
    • If your Instructor has allowed attachments,click Attachments below the box to upload a file
    • Click the "+" next to Advanced message options to view and select additional message options
    • Click Submit to add your New Post to the Discussion Forum
    • You may be able to Edit or Delete your own New Post that has not been Marked as read
  • To Reply to an existing post (you must be in Nested View):
    • Click Reply below the original post you wish to respond to (see Figure One, point C)
    • Click Quote original message to automatically add the date, time, and the original author and their post in your reply
    • Enter or cut/paste your comments in the HTML editor message box
    • As with New Posts, Attachements may be allowed
    • Advanced message options may now include the ability to Post as private message, which will restrict the view of your reply to only the Instructor and only you can remove this setting
    • Click Submit to add your Reply to the DIscussion Forum
    • You may be able to Edit or Delete your own Reply that has not been Marked as read
