CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR OCT. 28-NOV. 3

THURSDAY, OCT. 28:

LECTURE: As part of Cultural Harmony Week, SUNY Geneseo will host a lecture by bell hooks titled "Cultures of Belonging: Beyond Domination." hooks’ strong themes of anti-oppression and liberating pedagogy come together with ideas of what it takes to build communities of inclusion and belonging. What role does the academy play in creating communities that move beyond oppression and domination? 7 p.m., Wadsworth Auditorium. Free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available at the MacVittie College Union Ticket Office or by calling (585) 245-5873.

LEDERER GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery in Brodie Hall presents an exhibit by fabric artist Mary Ann Scarborough of Rochester and cibachrome photographer Mark Abrahamson of Seattle. The gallery is open daily from 2-4:30 p.m. and Thursdays 12-8 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Dec. 5.

LOCKHART GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Lockhart Gallery at McClellan House presents "Embracing Eatonville." This exhibition is being organized by internationally renowned photographer Carrie Mae Weems and features her work, as well as that of acclaimed photographers Dawoud Bey, Lonnie Graham and Deborah Willis. The show is conceived of as a photographic survey of the people and history of Eatonville, Fla., the nation’s first incorporated African-American town and the home of celebrated Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston. The four photographers respond to the town and its residents in diverse ways, ranging from Bey’s straightforward, almost anthropological portraits to Weems’s more poetic, evocatively personal meditations. The gallery is open daily from 2-5 p.m. and Thursdays 12-8 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Friday, Dec. 10.

OPUS GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Opus Gallery in the MacVittie College Union presents Rochester area artist Jean Stephens. The gallery is open daily from 1-5 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Oct. 31.

FRIDAY, OCT. 29:

CONCERT: The School of Performing Arts presents the Geneseo Chamber Singers and Carol Choristers Fall Choral Concert with Gerard Floriano directing. 8 p.m., Central Presbyterian Church, Geneseo. Free and open to the public.

INTERCULTURAL NIGHT DINNER: As part of Cultural Harmony Week, SUNY Geneseo will host an Intercultural Night Dinner featuring an evening of food and culturally based entertainment representative of the many ethnicities and cultures that call SUNY Geneseo home. 6 p.m., MacVittie College Union Ballroom. Admission at the door is $5 for the general public; $4 for faculty and staff; and $3 for SUNY Geneseo students.
