Call for Proposals Deadline Extended to June 30


SUNY Geneseo College and Siena Italian Studies are seeking session presenters for the fourth annual Intercultural Horizons Conference on October 9-10, 2014.  The conference committee is requesting sessions that will offer diverse, engaging experiences as well as resources for academics and professionals interested in advancing intercultural competence in their institutions and beyond.  An opportunity for an exchange of best practices and creative ideas, this conference provides direct networking with influential individuals representing a wide range of organizations, including international educators, leaders in community development, and global partners in civic engagement in the public and private sector.


The content of the session should fall under one or more of the following conference tracks:

  • Community development with diverse student populations
    • Engaging students across multiple identities
    • Discovering intercultural questions of generational diversity
    • Surviving the intercultural issues of diverse legal systems
    • Developing equal partnerships between asymmetrical economies
  • High impact practices of civic engagement and civic education
    • Providing public and private sector opportunities for international students
    • Comparing service learning at home and abroad
    • Renewing the role of the arts, ritual, and festival in community development
  • Intercultural competence and the goals of liberal education
    • Updating intercultural competence in General Education
    • Advancing intercultural competence in STEM courses
    • Finding community identity in distance learning and social media
    • Reading individual narratives into intercultural competence


Conference attendees are a diverse group of professionals, academics, activists, community leaders, and graduate students, dedicated to advancing intercultural competence.  With an anticipated attendance of 130 individuals and a program that allows conference attendees to customize their experience, presenters should plan on about 30 people per session.  Spaces can accommodate up to 60 attendees.


As a presenter, you have the opportunity to enjoy multiple benefits by participating in this great event.

  • Publish your paper.  Accepted papers for presentation will be published in early 2015.

Proposals will be accepted through EXTENDED TO JUNE 30.  Notification of acceptance will be sent by July 15, 2014.

Proposal submissions will be accepted electronically via the Proposal Submission Form (Closed).

Presenters will be asked to confirm their participation and register by July 15, 2014.

Preference will be given to sessions that include:

  • Multiple institutions and diverse perspectives
  • Student perspectives
  • Regional diversity
  • Panel discussions
  • Facilitated roundtables

All sessions must include adequate time for discussion.
