For Returning OAs


 Leadership Responsibilities

In addition to the duties assigned to all Orientation Advisors, returning OAs will be asked to act as exceptional role models for new staff members. Returning OAs must be comfortable leading in both active and passive ways. Returners will take an active role in staff training and some elements of the Summer Orientation Program. Examples include, but are not limited to, assisting the Central Staff with the Day in the Life of an OA segment of Spring Training and demonstrating OA duties during training. In addition, returning staff will be expected to lead by example, especially in terms of maintaining a positive attitude, respecting the abilities and judgment of new staff, and following through with assigned responsibilities. It will be important for a returning OA, as a leader, to rise to the challenge of combining previous experience with the dynamics of a new staff and a new year.  
  • Build relationships with, and serve as a resource for, students and families assigned to your Orientation small groups.
  • Greet students and families as they arrive.
  • Lead group discussions articulating Geneseo’s academic and community expectations and standards.
  • Conduct tours to acquaint new students with campus services and building locations.
  • Build working relationships with faculty, staff and administrators on campus.
  • Prepare Orientation activities, folders, signs and other materials.
  • Communicate information to students and families through skits and presentations.
  • Assist in the course registration process.
  • Participate in extensive training prior to sessions.
  • Facilitate Weekend of Welcome activities that assist new students’ transitions to Geneseo.

Conditions of Employment 

Orientation Advisors live on campus and work full-time from June 1-July 20, 2012, with additional responsibilities for WOW ’12 and January Orientation 2013. Summer Orientation program hours will include days, evenings, and weekends. During Orientation sessions, the staff works long days and evenings. Therefore, no additional employment commitments are possible for the term of appointment. When feasible, requests may be made for days off between sessions. There will be one weekend of mandatory staff training, tentatively scheduled for April 21-22, 2012. Additionally, OAs who have not graduated will return to Geneseo by August 22, 2012, to assist with Weeks of Welcome 2012 activities.
  • Ability to assume leadership role and responsibility for assigned projects and small groups.
  • Desire to work with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity in the Geneseo community.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and flexible attitude.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above maintained throughout the 2011-12 academic year.

Summer Orientation Dates (Tentative)

  • Senior OA pay of $1500 for working June 1 – July 20, 2012.
  • Meals during each Orientation session, plus $150 toward other food/meals.

 Important Info to Remember

All Orientation staff will participate in a mandatory weekend of training during the Spring semester, tentatively scheduled for April 21-22, 2012. This training will allow staff to get to know one another and begin building the skills necessary to welcome and serve students and their families during Geneseo’s Orientation.


Week of Welcome '12


All Orientation staff will participate in WOW '12 activities. OAs help new students move into the halls, facilitate programs (such as Convocation) throughout the first two weekends, and act as a resource for new students. Return date for WOW '12 is Wednesday, August 22, 2012.

  • Applications due Wednesday, February 8, 2012, by 4:00 pm.
  • Reference's Form due Wednesday, February 22, 2012 by 4:00 pm. 
  • Sign up for an individual interview with Kim Harvey, Director of New Student Programs. Individual interviews will be scheduled the week of February 13.
  • Group interview: Saturday, February 11, 2012 or Thursday, February 16, 2012.
  • Each applicant is responsible for signing up for both an individual and attending the group interview.
  • Notification letters will be sent by March 9, 2012.
  • Spring Training: Tentatively scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, April 21-22, 2012, approximately 10 am-5 pm each day.
  • Move into Onondaga Hall on June 1, 2012 for OA training.
