Dr. Joe Cope

Dr. Joe Cope is the Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of History at SUNY Geneseo.  He has a B.A. from the University of Michigan (1994) and a Ph.D. in History from the Pennsylvania State University (2001).

Dr. Cope has been a faculty member in the History Department at Geneseo since 2001, with a teaching focus on early modern European history.   As a faculty member, he earned a SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004.  At SUNY Geneseo, he has previously served as Chair of the History Department (2011-16), Director of the Center for Inquiry, Discovery and Development (2016-18), and Associate Provost for Academic Success (2018-22).  He was appointed as Interim Provost in 2022.

Dr. Cope’s research focuses on the British Atlantic, with a particular focus on interconnections and interactions between England and Ireland.  He has published a monograph entitled England and the 1641 Irish Rebellion (Boydell, 2009) and a number of articles on 17th century social and cultural history. 

Dr. Cope is a resident of Avon, NY, where he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Avon Free Library and an active member of the Lions Club.
