The work presents the foundation process and people involved in bringing and providing the Norbertines and then the Benedictine monks in Kościelna Wieś near Kalisz. History of the monastery of St. Lawrence in the 12th and 13th centuries is inextricably associated with two orders: the Premonstratensians and the Benedictine monks. The Norbertines, governed by the rule of St. Augustine reformed by Saint. Norbert of Xanten, emphasized strict observation of the rule and the subordination of branch monasteries to the mother monasteries. In turn, the Benedictines, who applied a rule based on the honor of God and man, as well as obedience, were engaged in liturgy, intellectual activity and physical work. The beginnings of the monastery of St. Wawrzyniec in Kościelna Wieś is not completely known, but there are differences in the assessment of researchers as to the time of its creation. Sporadic source information and discrepancies in historians' positions mean that the date of the monastery's foundation remains a matter of debate. Moreover, there is no unanimity as to the founder of the monastery. Researchers put forward various proposals, often based on different chronological assumptions. Although the existence of the Premonstratensians in Kościelna Wieś near Kalisz ended in the early 1290s, their activity brought benefits to the region, especially in the context of contacts and protection. The Benedictines, who were the provost of the Tyniec monastery, received subsequent property grants, although their activity was limited by their dependence on the Tyniec abbey and the general decline in the importance of the order in Poland in favor of others, such as the Cistercians and Premonstratensians.

The Norbertine monastery in Strzelno was founded by Piotr Wszeborowic, the voivode of Kuyavia and the castellan of Kruszwica, in the late 1280s. Organizationally, it was subordinated to the monastery of Saint Vincent in Wrocław. The first mention of provosts appears in sources only in 1220. The provosts came to Strzelno mainly from the monastery in Wrocław, but not all of them came from Silesia. With the election of Gregory of Milejów, the period of provosts coming from Polish monasteries, mainly from the middle class, begins. Only in the 16th century did representatives of the nobility appear. From the 14th to the second half of the 16th century, the office of provost in Strzelno was often a step towards promotion to the position of abbot of the monastery in Wrocław. The vast majority of monasteries of the Polish Premonstratensian Circaria did not keep catalogs of their abbots or provosts, which would constitute a valuable source of information about the internal life and traditions of these monasteries. The exception is the chronicle of the abbots of the monastery of St. Vincent in Wrocław, written down by Prior Mikołaj Liebental by 1504 and continued until 1692. In the Norbertine monastery in Strzelno, as in other houses of this rule, the list of local provosts was compiled only in the first decades of the 18th century. This list was made on a blank page of the monastery copier from around 1573. The list of provosts was compiled on the basis of monastic documents and archival materials, as well as the historical memory of the successors in the position of provost. It is therefore necessary to develop a complete catalog of the superiors of the provostship in Strzelno, which would facilitate knowledge of the history of this monastery and contribute to more detailed research on the clergy, especially the monastic clergy. The chronological framework of this catalog is determined by the first mentions of the superiors of the Norbertine monastery in Strzelno and the year 1837, when the monastery was finally liquidated by the Prussian authorities.

The monastery in Witów near Piotrków Trybunalski was built before 1185 by the bishop of Płock, Wit (Vitus) from Chotla. Some time later, his brother Dzierżko (Derslaus) founded a monastery in Busko. Legal rights made both monasteries dependent on the founder's family. Initially, Witów was probably a double foundation, for both monks and nuns, living according to the adapted Augustinian rule. At the turn of the first decade of the 13th century, Augustinian canons in Witów adopted the Rule of St. Norbert and Premont's obedience. Despite the relatively small assets of the monastery and the destruction that was probably caused by the Tatar invasions in 1241, the foundation managed to survive. Church sources from the end of the 13th century again mention the monastery in Witów and the associated nickname of the sisters in Busko. In the 13th–15th centuries, the monastery's income gradually increased, which was to some extent due to successful disputes with the Cistercians in Sulejów. In the 15th century, Witów successfully competed for control with the fraternal foundations of Wrocław and Brzesko over the monasteries of Norbertine nuns in Lesser Poland. Until the end of that century, Witów controlled the settlements in Busko and Płock and the neighboring parish of Krzyżanowice, which provided additional income.
