Students will take courses in any of the departments of the University of the West Indies. Primarily, students will locate at the Mona campus in Jamaica, but UWI also has campuses at Cave Hill in Barbados and St. Augustine in Trinidad. There are two types of program: a student exchange and a study abroad program. The student exchange is limited to Geneseo students only; the study abroad program is open to any non-Geneseo student, both within SUNY and without. Program costs differ between the exchange and study abroad programs; please visit the 'program costs' link to the right to review the costs in more detail.
The Countries and Cities
Jamaica is the third largest island in the Caribbean Sea. It lies between Cuba and Hispaniola (the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic). The Mona campus is located outside the capital, Kingston, toward the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands. Cave Hill is just to the north of the island nation's capital, Bridgetown. Trinidad is the most southerly Caribbean island, and is close to Venezuela. St. Augustine is east of the capital, Port of Spain.
Learning in the West Indies is highly prized, and educational standards are high. The University of the West Indies is a university serving 15 countries, former colonies of Great Britain. The UWI is committed to the development of the region through training of its human resources, conducting research, delivering advisory services to governments as well as to the private sector and forging links with other institutions in the wider region and the rest of the world.
All students will need to have a GPA of at least 3.0 and be at a minimum of sophomore standing. Applicants with a disciplinary record or pending disciplinary hearings should alert the Study Abroad Office.
Two orientations will be held in Geneseo prior to departure. In addition, students will receive onsite orientation to the campus, area, and the country, upon their arrival at UWI.
UWI will assist students with campus housing or in finding off-campus accommodation.
