The Department of Theatre and Dance is proud to announce open auditions for the first two productions of its 2021-2022 season:

The Waverly Gallery by Kenneth Lonergan

The Hatmaker’s Wife by Lauren Yee

Student actors, regardless of the size of their role, all receive 3 credits of Theatre 399 (Rehearsal) and 1 credit of Theatre 260 (Acting Practicum).

All Geneseo students are welcome to audition at the open call on Tuesday, August 31, 4:00-7:00 pm, in the Black Box Theatre Brodie Hall.

SUNY Geneseo’s Theatre and Dance program is committed to maintaining an open casting policy that places all Geneseo students, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, national origin, citizenship, age, military or veteran status, or sexual orientation, on an equal playing field in terms of eligibility to audition, be considered for, and/or cast in both faculty- and student-directed productions. This policy is part of all Theatre casting announcements and is upheld unless a script and/or its author identity specific casting requirements. SUNY Geneseo’s Theatre program does not now, nor has it ever, permitted racist makeup of any kind to be used in its productions.

You can request an audition packet by email ( in which you’ll find everything you need to know about the auditions, the stories of the plays, and the character descriptions. There is no preparation necessary as we’ll supply you with readings the day of, and no previous theatrical experience is expected or required.

You only need to print and answer the questions on the first four pages of the packet (they’re easy!) and bring them to the auditions. Doing this in advance will speed up your audition time. The last two pages have character descriptions for each play. If for some reason you can’t fill the first four pages out early, it is fine for you to fill them out at auditions as we will provide copies of them.

Callbacks by invitation will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 4:00-7:00 pm.

Please dress comfortably and coolly for auditions as it’s likely to be warm in the theatre and we are likely to ask you to move around!

Looking forward to seeing you on August 31! Anyone with questions should address them to Professor Kaplan at
