WOW Schedule of Events 2019

Weeks of Welcome (WOW) is the official start of a new academic year. It's a transitional time when students get to know the campus community and prepare for their academic endeavors.

The activities and events offered in the first weeks of the semester help incoming students build personal connections with other students, faculty and staff, and promote a sense of belonging. Participation in Weeks of Welcome is a great way for new students to dive into the Geneseo experience!

GOLD Workshop: Leadership Concepts

1:00 pm–2:00 pm in MacVittie College Union 114

In this highly interactive GOLD workshop, participants will engage in a variety of activities ranging from self-reflection on what leadership means to identifying with leadership philosophies of historical and contemporary leaders. The instructor will explain the nature and purpose of the GOLD program, the requirements for completion of the various certificates, and will guide participants through a foundational understanding of leadership.


Last Chance Orientation

1:00 pm–4:00 pm, Newton 214 (check-in 30 minutes prior)

Mandatory for new first year and transfer students who did not attend Summer Orientation. Kick off the fall semester as a Knight by joining us for an in-depth afternoon focused on preparing you for your college career. We will help to make sure you have all the information you need to be ready to begin classes. Last Chance Orientation includes information on campus health & safety, advising, information regarding life on campus, how to get involved, and a tour to ensure you know where your classes are. Light refreshments offered.

Opening Day Picnic

4:30 pm–5:30 pm on the MacVittie College Union Patio

Join us for the dinner option tonight, a BBQ outside of the Union. You need to wear the wristband given to you at move-in. If you an off campus student, please stop in Blake A 108 before 4:00pm on Friday to pick up your band. This meal is automatically taken off your meal plan.


New Class "G" Photo

5:45 pm in the College Stadium

This photo will be taken directly following the President's Welcome Picnic. Make your way to Geneseo's brand new stadium to be a part of this annual tradition and wear your blue and white.


New Student Convocation

6:30 pm in Wadsworth Auditorium

All new first year and transfer students convene in Wadsworth Auditorium to usher in the new college year. Faculty and Staff from across campus gather together in their regalia to honor the incoming class. A specially selected faculty member will give a short, not-to-be-missed address to the class.


First Knight

7:30 pm–8:45 pm on the College Green

Your Geneseo family welcomes you to campus with this traditional event. Listen to live music and enjoy food and activities for your class. We end the night with an amazing firework show over the valley. Events are sponsored by Department of Student Life, Student Association, New Student Programs, Undergraduate Alumni Association (UAA) Geneseo Late Knight, Geneseo Campus Activities Board and Campus Scheduling and Events.

Knights Are Aware and Care

9:45am - 12:15 pm in the College Union Ballroom or Wadsworth Auditorium

Mandatory training for all new first year and transfer students. Attendance will be taken - it is imperative that you go to your assigned location.

As Geneseo Knights, we are committed to promoting an environment where all members of our community can freely engage with all that Geneseo has to offer. The program will be presented in two parts – bystander intervention, Green Dot, and an exploration of the impact of sexual assault on students and our community, Tim Collins presents "The Script."

New Student Challenge: Grit and Wit

1:30 pm–3:30 pm Onondaga Field

At Grit ‘N Wit you have the opportunity to try something different. To push yourself physically and mentally. To overcome challenges and obstacles. And help your teammates accomplish the same. Participants generally compete as teams and run through and around campus working together to take on the 16 physical obstacles and mental challenges. The course is to designed to build community, camaraderie, confidence and cleverness. You need all of those to succeed in life, and all of those to succeed on the course.


All-Hall Meeting

6:30 pm in each Residence Hall

All residential students should attend. You will meet the hall staff as well as learn about expectations, policy, and procedure. Please look out for information from your Area Coordinators and Residence Directors on where to meet.

Summer Reading Book Discussion

10:00 am–11:00 am in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom

Each year, faculty and staff come together to choose a book that will introduce students to the rigorous and interconnected academic environment at SUNY Geneseo. Faculty, Staff, and Students from Tesla House, Dante House, Eco House, and the Access Opportunity Program participate in reading the book over the summer and then get together to discuss the book.


Cultivating an Inclusive Community

11:00 am or 1:00 pm in Wadsworth Auditorium. Check your building location for time.

Mandatory for all new first year and transfer students. Attendance will be taken - it is imperative that you attend with your assigned group. This event provides an important opportunity to lay the foundation for an inclusive and welcoming campus community. Creating and sustaining an inclusive community relies on all members of our diverse community. Let's embrace our Community Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: "Together, we commit ourselves to pluralism, cultivating a community that respects difference and promotes a sense of inclusion and belonging."

Student Organization Expo

The Student Organization Expo, hosted by the Department of Student Life, offers both new and returning students a "one-stop-shopping" experience to learn about what Geneseo has to offer outside of the classroom. With more than 200 registered student organizations, there is something for everyone.

Donuts for Democracy

Join the Andrew Goodman Foundation Vote Everywhere Ambassadors and GOLD for free donuts, laptop stickers, and a chance to register to vote. Andrew Goodman was a 20-year old college student who was murdered by the KKK in 1964 for registering African Americans to vote in Mississippi. Come and have all of your questions about voting at Geneseo answered.


Annual LBGTQ+ Mixer

4:00 pm–5:00 pm in the MacVittie College Union MOSAIC Room

The Office of LGBTQ programs and services invites ALL members of the LBGTQIA+ community and allies to our Annual LBGTQ+ Mixer! Come meet other students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated to making SUNY Geneseo a more inclusive and safe environment for LBGTQIA+ individuals. Meet the Team Throw-Around

Students of all years are encouraged to join Geneseo Ultimate Frisbee to throw some discs, play games, participate in frisbee-related competitions, eat snacks, and socialize with the team in order to meet new friends and learn about the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. All are welcome no matter what level of athleticism - no knowledge of the sport required. This event will additionally be one of the first "practices" of the year, so students who are interested in a club sport can meet the team and learn some basic rules and techniques.


Welcome Back Multicultural BBQ and Mixer

The Annual Multicultural BBQ/Mixer is an opportunity to welcome students to the campus and for students, staff, and faculty to meet each other. This event is free and open to the campus community.


Susan B. Anthony and Her Legacy

2:00 pm in the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester

Women’s and Gender Studies is co-sponsoring this Susan B Anthony Event with the Livingston County Historical Society in honor of 100 years of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Student tickets (available online or Alpha Phi with be selling them week of on campus) are $8 when purchased in advance (general public is $18).There will be a panel discussion including moderator will be Dr. Cathy Adams, and panelists are Provost Dr. Stacey Robertson, Dr Justin Behrend  from history, Deborah Hughes the director of the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester, and actress/writer Christina Rausa.


The Great DuBois with Circus Club

The Great DuBois is a fast-paced show filled with magic, juggling, circus stunts, and comedy as seen on The Tonight Show and The Late Night Show with David Letterman. Setting up a schedule and prioritizing your tasks can be very overwhelming. This GOLD workshop will help you figure out where you spend your time, how to organize your tasks more efficiently, and how to fit in all the studying, reading, and socializing your life as a student requires.

Volunteer Fair

1:00 pm–4:00 pm in the MacVittie College Union Lobby and Ballroom

Learn about organizations in the community and on campus that support volunteerism and service. Representative from over 40 community agencies, and nonprofits, as well as college departments and clubs, will be present to recruit volunteers and share information about their programs and services. As opposed to a traditional workshop format, this fair is offered once each semester and seeks to connect students with opportunities to serve in areas that are of interest to them. Attendees are encouraged to visit as many agencies and organizations as possible to learn about the breadth of service that is available to them in the region.


Tie-Dye with Hillel

4:00 pm–6:00 pm on the Onondaga Volleyball Courts

Come eat some snacks, and tie-dye a t-shirt that says Geneseo in Hebrew with members of SUNY Geneseo Hillel! Whether you are Jewish or not, come to learn more about our organizations and the community's presence on campus. Mingle with current E-board members and other interested individuals.


Paint with the Zetas

Paint a masterpiece with the Zetas! Join the sisters of Zeta Phi Beta and follow a video tutorial to create a unique piece of artwork and create memories for years to come.

Knight's First Day of Service

8:30 am–1:00 pm in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom

Knight's First Day of Service is our fall volunteer opportunity for first year and transfer students. Students engage in service projects in groups at local organizations, agencies, and on campus. The event begins at 8:30 am in the MacVittie College Union Ballroom where students will hear from the College president, receive a free t-shirt, and be assigned to their project. Students will walk or be transported to their service site and will reconvene at the Geneseo Interfaith Center for a homemade lunch and reflection.

Sign up through GOLD. Click "Browse Workshops and Register," provide your Geneseo credentials, search for Knight's First Day, and click "register."

Please note that many projects will take place outside. Wear clothing you are OK with getting dirty, long pants, close-toed shoes, bring a long sleeve shirt, and water bottle.

Enjoy the carnival with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship! We will cook food and play games to welcome new and returning students to campus, and to tell students about our club.


WOW-Capella

7:30 pm MacVittie College Union Patio (Rain location: Ballroom)

Come join Geneseo's five A Capella Groups for the annual WowCapella concert. Groups will perform songs on the union patio for new and returning students. All five groups will sing three songs each to showcase the groups' talent and personalities, ultimately encouraging students to audition or just listen and enjoy.

Cultivating Community Dialogue

“Cultivating Community” is an initiative that seeks to affirm SUNY Geneseo’s value for inclusivity, which we define as “fostering a diverse campus community marked by mutual respect for the unique talents and contributions of each individual.” The series draws on mindful dialogue and creative thinking as the tools through which we can learn, understand, connect and grow. Each dialogue provides participants the opportunity to voice their experience with the topic, learn from others’ perspectives, share innovative ideas and explore new possibilities related to the topic.


Tie Blankets for the Children's Hospital

Colleges Against Cancer is hosting a great way for new students to get to know about their community, learn more about CAC and Relay for Life, ask any upperclassmen about other leadership and volunteer opportunities on campus all while helping out children and families in need.

Bamboo Bonanza

7:30 pm–10:00 pm in the College Union Lobby

This event will give students the opportunity to create a free bamboo plant holder of their own using the materials set up and given to them. Stations will be set up to provide students with a bamboo shoot, cup, gravel, water, and paint supplies to decorate their cup. E-board members will be present at each station to help students create their bamboo holder and provide information about Chinese Culture Club.
