- How it worked
- Rotors scramble text a different way for each character
- Reflector sends partially-encrypted text back through rotors so Enigma cipher is decryptable by the same machine and settings that encrypts it
- Plugboard: allowed the person coding to swap letters
- So an Enigma key is rotors and reflector used, rotor order, initial rotor position, plugboard configuration
- To encrypt a message, set up chosen key, type message on keyboard, record/send ciphertext that appears on lamps
- To decrypt, set up same key as sender used, type ciphertext on keyboard, and plaintext will appear on lamps
