Many are terrestrial crustaceans which can be found in rotting wood, under stones, crawling on your house and, in some cases, in your house. They will chew on wood but for the most part are of little consequence and are benefical to the breakdown of leaf litter and other plant material. Some researchers will use them to clean the flesh from animals as part of the process for studying and mounting skeletons.
