228 Textbook Errors

These are from the old edition.  Some are changed, some are fixed, some aren't.  Plenty for you to update me on …

1.2 page 15  On page 15 I found an error on one of the graphs. The scale on the y-axis for the graph of mass per bacterium vs. time goes from 0-10 while the data goes from  0-1 in the chart. The graph has each point in the correct position if the scale was correct.

1.2 page 23  Consider the following data describing the growth of AN tadpole.  Should be a tadpole

1.5 page 56 it says " This simple rules works only for an updating function expressing a proportional relationship." It should obviously be "rule" not "rules".

1.5 page 57 in example 1.5.7 in the equation that reads bt=f^-1(6.0)=6.0/3.0=3.0. The 3.0 in the "middle" of the equation should be a 2.0.

1.7 page 84; bottom of page.  How long it will take a population with r<1 to decrease to some specified value?
Even though this sentence is meant to ask a question it is not because the words "it" and "will" are backwards. If those were switched then it would be asking a question.

1.7  page 87; Example 1.7.16.  It says suppose td = 26,200 then it shows td = 0.6931/a then in the problem it shows th in the denominator and plugs 26,200 in
that place.  The th is not supposed to be in the equation at all. It was just a typo. The td was meant to be in the place of the th.

answers for 1.7  on p809 (answers to selected exercises).  It says that the second part of the answer to #33 is about 5.865, while it is actually about 5.684

1.9 page 101, bottom table under the "what we did" column, fourth row down "multiplied volume inhaled (0.6) by ambient concentration (5.0) to get 7.5*" .6x5=3 not 7.5.

answers for 1.10 on pg 812 on the x axis of the graph of number 19 , the scale should go from 0.8 to 1.0, but goes from 0.8 to 10.

1.11 page 124, at the end of the first example, the equation is V* = cVt + u.  But the Vt should be V*.

4.2 page 353 in the answer for example 4.2.4 the exponent changes from a "3" to a "2" for no apparent reason.

4.2 page 357 in the paragraph "To solve this equation for the total number of AIDS case,..." it should be "total number of AIDS cases,..."

4.3 on page 362, Example 4.3.3 reads "In example 4.3.1, Algorithm 4.2..."  He's talking about example 4.3.2 and not 4.3.1.

5.1 page 417 bottom line... "greek" should capitalized.

answers for 5.3 on page 840 there is an error concerning the graph of the solution of 5.3 #41 in the answers section. The equilibrium when b=0 is stable when h>1 and the book says that it is unstable, and therefore the line there should be solid instead of dashed. Also when b=0 the equilibrium is unstable when h<1 and it says that it is stable. Finally the line of the equilibrium b=1-h should be dashed when h>1 since this is unstable.

5.5 pg 447.  In figure 5.5.27 the titles are wrong, the graphs a and b are mixed up.

answers for 5.6 on pg 843 they are missing the p2-nullcline where p1=1000. They say that there is an equilibrium at (1000,1000) but the one nullcline is absent.

6.1 page 490 in the second to last sentence of the second to last paragraph. It reads ".. the line with slope 1 indicates that exactly 1 immigrant arrived per year (Figure 6.1.5)." But according to that figure I think that it should be "1 immigrant arrived per day."  In fact, the whole extended example seems to alternate between years and days as the unit.

6.2 page 504, question 53, the book says "...that came from the pollenis type..." instead of "...that came from the pollen is type...".

6.3 page 508,  in Example 6.3.8, event A should be 2.7≤rt≤3.6 according to example 6.3.4

6.3 pg 510  Figure 6.3.36 N=2 has Pr=.3 but it should be Pr = .2

6.6 page 546, for questions 45-46. The equation should read g(x)=\alpha e^- \alpha x

6.7 page 550, figure 6.7.80 should be listed in example 6.7.13 rather than figure 6.7.81.

anwers for 6.8 on page 853, question #35.  The solution reads "only 1/9 of the people live in the smaller city" where in fact 1/11 of the people live in the smaller city. Because 100,000 people out of a total 1,100,000 people live in the smaller city, (100,000)/(1,100,000) = 1/11 of the people, not 1/9. The fact that that number is off throws off the rest of the solution as well.

7.6 page 659, #60 it refers you to the Algorithm 5.2 on separation of varibles but the Algorithm on separation of variables is 5.3.

7.7 page 662 in graph "c" on the top right of the page it says that there were 2 occurences of 10 events in 1 second while graph "b" shows that there was only one.

answers for 7.8 on page 864, question #33.  It gives the p.d.f equation for A(sub 20) and in the equation, at the denominator of the exponent, it should be 2(.0545) which is .109 but instead is written "1.09"
