Tatsu-Do History

Soke William R. Cavalier Jr., was born on July 31, 1940, in Rochester, New York. Soke began training in Chito Ryu Karate in 1957. In the spring of 1958, Soke Cavalier moved to Florida, where he trained in Yoshin Ryu Ju Jutsu and Shito Ryu Karate under the direction of Sensei Mattson.

Upon reaching black belt status, Soke Cavalier returned to New York State and continued to train in various styles of Karate, Jujutsu and Kung Fu, both in the United States and Canada. Sensei Mattson referred Soke Cavalier to Kyoto Durant, who at first would not accept him as a student until he had proven himself. After three years, Master Durant finally let him join Goshin Jutsu Kyo Jujo, where Soke studied Karate, Ju Jutsu, Aiki Jutsu, and Kobudo. In 1976 Grand Master Durant gave Soke Cavalier permission to form his own style of;

Tatsu-Do Karate
Tatsu-Do Aiki Jutsu
Tatsu-Do Kobudo
Tatsu-Do Iai Jutsu

Soke Cavalier attributes all of his knowledge to Grand Master Durant and has certificates signed by Grand Master Durant, as well as Master Hohan Soken, Master Fuse Kise, Master Daniel K. Pai, and Master Glenn Premru.

Today, Soke William Cavalier Jr. is the head of Tatsu-Do Yudanshakai and president of the Traditional Martial Arts Association. Soke is chief advisor to Master Matthew Durant, Dai Soke of Goshin Jutsu International, and holds the rank of Tenth Degree Black Belt in both Tatsu-Do and in Goshin Jutsu Ryu. Soke was inducted into the International Karate Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in 1988, the Eastern U.S.A. Martial Arts Association Hall of Fame in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1991, and Goshin Jutsu Hall of Fame in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1993 and the World Martial Arts Association Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in 1995.

The Tatsu-Do system has been recognized as a legitimate system by Master Aoki, 10th Dan of the Shorei Ryu style.

Art Forms

Karate

Tatsu-Do Karate incorporates aspects of traditional karate such as punches, kicks, and blocks as well as self defense. The upper ranks incoporate aspects of Ju Jutsu, Aiki Jutsu and advanced self defense while also learning the use of weapons.

Aiki Jutsu

Aiki Jutsu is seemingly the flipside of Karate. Where Karate teaches hard blocks and punches, Aiki Jutsu teaches softer techniques and the redirecting of your opponents momentum. Joint locks, pressure points and throws make up most of Aiki Jutsu instruction. The Aiki Jutsu classes are open to students who hold at least a green belt in Tatsu-Do Karate.

Iai Justsu

Iai Justu is the art of sword drawing. Both Boken and Katana are used in instruction with more emphasis placed on the live blade. Iai Jutsu is open only to black belts in Tatsu-Do Karate and is only taught at the Hombu.
