ROME began as a monarchy, but became a republic around 500 BCE.

As a republic, Rome began acquiring other people's land. As an empire, it continued with shocking success.

By the time Julius Caesar saw his last March 15th, the Roman Empire was in almost complete control of the Mediterranean basin and much of what is now Spain and France.

To facilitate travel within the Empire and yet more conquest, the Roman legions built bridges, roads, aqueducts that are still standing, marvels of engineering.
