Peer Critiques of Code-Breaking Essay
Focus on “mechanics,” i.e., writing below the level of whole-essay argument and organization e.g., word choice, sentence structure (are they clear, are there simpler ways of saying things) and even spelling, grammar, punctuation
Try for constructive criticism, i.e., point out ways of improving essays without criticizing author
Groups of 3: everyone reads the other 2 essays, then groups discuss each essay in turn
Formality
- Writing as part of a conversation as guide
- In this case your essay continues the conversation we started about breaking substitution ciphers last Thursday; it’s a little more private than Thursday was, because it’s really you talking to me.
- This tells you a lot about what sort of background to assume the reader has, and how formally to write (about as formal/professional as in a class discussion).
Final essays
- Email to me by tomorrow night
- Meet with me to talk about them for ½ hour by Tuesday Feb. 4
- Sign up for meetings either via Google calendar or on the paper schedule outside my office
