Race Essay Peer Critiques
Focus on the arguments offered to support theses: is argument convincing on balance, what parts are strong, what need strengthening, is evidence provided to support claims being made, etc.
Summarize each essay’s argument; authors listen for misunderstandings
Ask for (more) feedback where you want it
Themes
- Evidence: Poe’s childhood in slave-owning family, slave dialect, minstrel stereotypes
- Connecting evidence to larger argument
- Accompany summary of evidence with a sentence or two explaining how it supports your thesis (or intermediate claims leading to the thesis), for example
- “This shows that …”
- “Poe would have believed … because …”
- Opposing arguments/views
- Lots of reasons to bring them in: to explicitly refute them, to show that you know the full conversation (but don’t let this make you seem pedantic), to avoid seeming to dodge the issue when there is an easily foreseeable objection to your position, etc.
