Habitat for HumanitySUNY GENESEO

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does Geneseo Habitat do?

Geneseo Habitat collaborates with Livingston County Habitat to provide needy families with affordable, safe, decent housing. Volunteers from Habitat typically work on Saturdays, building and renovating these houses.

Do I have to have construction experience to be a part of Habitat?

Not necessarily. While construction experience is helpful, there will be construction experts on site to guide student volunteers and show them what to do. Also, Habitat needs enthusiastic, hardworking, and intelligent individuals to help us raise funds for this construction.

When does Habitat meet?

Habitat typically meets every other Thursday. See the calendar for more information about meeting locations and times.

How long do Habitat meetings last?

Habitat meetings vary depending on what will be discussed or done at them. They can be as short as a half-hour.

Does Habitat do anything besides just building houses?

Yes! Habitat raises money to finance its builds with activities such as Shack-a-thon, pancake breakfasts, nights downtown at the Statesmen, can/bottle drives, and many other fun events. Furthermore, Habitat raises awareness about the need for volunteers to help rebuild houses (see Milne Library Exhibit) and even destroys houses (as was the case for the Spring Break trip in 2007).

I'd like to know more about Habitat, but I'm not ready to commit myself to a meeting or work trip. Who can I talk to?

We'd love to talk with you about Habitat. Feel free to email any of the officers or you can email us at habitat@geneseo.edu
